Robert Szustkowski, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, sued Ringier Axel Springer Polska for over PLN 54 million, accusing the publishing house of failing to comply with the provisions of the 2020 settlement. The conflict between Szustkowski and RASP dates back to 2017, when articles appeared in the group’s media suggesting his ties to Russia, which damaged his good name. These publications had serious consequences for both Szustkowski’s professional and personal life, leading to the loss of his investment, the closure of his charitable foundation and the need to ensure the safety of his family.

The 2020 settlement

In 2020, the parties reached a settlement, under which RASP agreed to remove all materials that violated Szustkowski’s dignity, apologize and donate a specified amount to charity. However, according to Szustkowski, the publishing house did not comply with the terms of the settlement, and information damaging to his reputation continues to appear in the media. In August 2024, the entrepreneur called on RASP to pay a contractual penalty of PLN 50 million for the delay in implementing the provisions of the settlement. When the publishing house refused, the case went to court.

One of the largest property claims

The lawsuit filed by Szustkowski is one of the largest property claims in the history of personal rights protection in Poland. The entrepreneur is fighting not only for compensation, but also to restore his good name. Negative publications had serious consequences for him, including the withdrawal of investments from Poland, the closure of the charity foundation, and health problems. In addition, the accusations also affected his son’s professional and personal life.

The role and responsibility of the media and publishers

The role of the media and the responsibility of publishers for the content they publish are key aspects of this case. The Szustkowski case may set an important precedent in Polish civil law, emphasizing the need for media to be held accountable for improper publications.
