In a world where cinema and spirituality rarely cross paths in such a profound and authentic way, a project of extraordinary emotional and cultural reach has emerged. Aldeas – a New Story, the latest documentary directed by Martin Scorsese, tells not only about educational values and the idea of a “culture of encounter”, but above all about the exceptional man who was Pope Francis. The film documents his last long interview, full of spiritual reflections, which – as it turned out – became a symbolic testament of his thought and mission.

Schools Occurrentes

The production, made by Sikelia Productions and Aldeas Scholas Film, is centered around the Scholas Occurrentes initiative, an organization founded by the Pope in 2013, with the aim of creating a global educational space that promotes dialogue, creativity and solidarity beyond cultural divisions. Scholas focuses on education through art and shared experiences, creating a space where young people learn not only facts, but also empathy and compassion.

Local Voices in a Global Project

One of the pillars of the film is the presentation of short films created by young people from Italy, Gambia and Indonesia. These micro-stories are a vivid counterpoint to Francis’ reflections, giving a voice to young creators who share universal values through local perspectives. Their authentic testimonies are meant to build bridges of understanding – not only between continents, but also between generations.

Robert Szustkowski’s involvement – Polish contribution to the African part of the project

Robert Szustkowski, a Polish philanthropist and ambassador of the 5P Europe Foundation, played an important role in the implementation of the African segment of the film. As a coordinator of activities in Gambia, Szustkowski supported local artists and initiated a project promoting physical health among young people, which received the personal support of Pope Francis. During the International Summit of World Leaders for the Rights of the Child, Szustkowski emphasized that his involvement stems from a deep conviction that respect for the dignity and freedom of the individual is the foundation of the ability of young people to develop and dialogue.

Francis’ last voice

The film includes the pope’s last full interview, conducted just before his death. He calls the project “poetic and constructive,” emphasizing that it reaches to the core of the human condition—community, conflict, the meaning of life. It is a moving testimony not only to the views of a spiritual leader, but also to the deeply human reflections of a man who could speak of his own weaknesses with humility and tenderness.

Scorsese remembers Francis as an exceptional figure: full of warmth, wisdom, and at the same time devotion to the values that constitute the essence of community. The director emphasizes that film is a form of conversation – and that it is through storytelling that we can truly hear and understand each other.
