Ringier Axel Springer Polska is facing a serious lawsuit, the stake of which may be a record contractual penalty in the history of Polish civil law – 54 million zlotys. The lawsuit filed by Robert Szustkowski, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, concerns failure to perform the provisions of the settlement concluded in 2020.

The beginning of the conflict

The dispute began in 2017, when articles damaging Szustkowski’s reputation appeared in the media of Ringier Axel Springer Polska. They suggested his alleged connections with Russia and even the role of an agent of influence, which had serious consequences for his professional and personal life, including loss of investment and social isolation.

Lawsuit for failure to perform the settlement

In 2020, the parties reached an agreement. Ringier Axel Springer Polska undertook to remove the articles damaging Szustkowski’s good name, apologize and donate the funds to charity. In addition, actions were to be taken to prevent future violations. Despite the settlement, Szustkowski claims that Ringier Axel Springer Polska has not implemented its provisions. According to him, some articles are still available in the group’s media, and new publications are still appearing. For this reason, he is seeking PLN 54 million in compensation.

Far-reaching consequences

Szustkowski’s lawsuit may have far-reaching consequences for the media in Poland. The case raises questions about the limits of media liability for published content and may be a precedent for future cases concerning violations of personal rights. In addition, it may affect the verification and journalistic integrity in Polish media.
