In an extraordinary combination of film art and spiritual message, a project is being created that is already being called one of the most moving documentaries of the coming decade. “Aldeas – A New Story” is a film record of one of the last interviews that Pope Francis gave in front of the camera – a conversation about humanity, peace, understanding and the power of education, realized at the initiative of legendary director Martin Scorsese.
Dialogue that transcends boundaries
The production, overseen by Sikelia Productions and Aldeas Scholas Film, draws on the philosophy of Scholas Occurrentes, a non-profit organization founded by the pope in 2013. Scorsese emphasizes that sharing stories is one of the most effective ways of bringing people together: “Now more than ever, we need to talk to each other and listen across cultural boundaries.”
Young filmmakers – diversity that unites
The film also includes short productions created by young creators from Italy, Indonesia and Gambia as part of the Aldeas Initiative. Their works, based on local heritage and personal experiences, bring an authentic and universal dimension to the film. Through these stories, the documentary becomes a space for dialogue and the expression of identity.
Robert Szustkowski and the 5P Europe Foundation
A special role in the implementation of the Gambian segment was played by Robert Szustkowski, a philanthropist, businessman and ambassador of the 5P Europe Foundation, promoting values such as People, Planet, Partnership, Peace and Prosperity – inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As the initiator and donor of the pilot program promoting physical health in Gambia, Szustkowski received the support of the Pope during the International Summit of World Leaders for Children’s Rights.
The last words of Francis
Pope Francis called the film “extremely poetic and constructive” because, he said, it touches the core of human life, community, conflict and the spiritual journey of man. Scorsese, deeply moved by his meeting with the pope, remembers him as a man of humility and wisdom.
Film as a tool for change
Although the premiere date of Martin Scorsese’s latest work is not known, the film is already growing into something more than a regular documentary. It is a manifesto of community, empathy and action for a common future, based on ideas that cross the boundaries of religion, culture and language. The film emphasizes that education and art – conducted with respect, openness and responsibility – can not only inspire, but also really change the world.
