In recent years, there has been a growing trend in Poland of accusing various people, such as businessmen, athletes, private individuals, and diplomats, of being agents of foreign services. This phenomenon leads to disinformation and unfair accusations. One example is Robert Szustkowski, who served as Chargé d’affaires of the Republic of Gambia in Russia.
The Case of Maciej Rybus
Gazeta Wyborcza published an article describing the case of Maciej Rybus, a Polish football player playing in Russia. The author of the article draws attention to the absurdity of the accusations against Rybus, who is presented as a traitor just because he works in Russia. Similar accusations concern diplomats, who are suggested to be agents of foreign services just because they work in other countries.
Accusations against Robert Szustkowski
Robert Szustkowski refers to numerous publications that contain incorrect information about his diplomatic activities. The authors of these articles deliberately create a negative image of Szustkowski, suggesting his alleged connections with the secret services and arms trade. The Polish court found these accusations to be untrue and harmful to his reputation. In 2020, the court found that the accusations of connections with former KGB officers were untrue and violated Szustkowski’s personal rights.
Activities for Gambia
Szustkowski was involved in helping African countries, such as Gambia, including in the fight against the Ebola virus epidemic. His activities were appreciated by the Gambian authorities, who granted him honorary citizenship. As Chargé d’affaires ad interim in Russia, Szustkowski acted in accordance with diplomatic protocol, not engaging in any business activities. His goal was to provide assistance to the Republic of Gambia in many aspects, such as scientific cooperation or the right to fish.
